Our Mission

The RCES PTA has been supporting our students since the school's founding in 1990.  Our mission is to achieve educational excellence by encouraging parental involvement, building strong teacher-parent relationships, enabling academic enrichment programs, and providing academic, fun, and family-oriented activities that promote learning and strengthen our community.

What Do We Do?

We Finance School Programs

Our operating budget is ~$50,000 per year.

Major projects funded during the 2018-19 school year included installation of a much-needed permanent shade structure for the playground; school-wide consumables & equipment, academic enrichment programs, and an increase in reimbursements to teachers for classroom items; a scholarship fund to help defray the costs of field trips for those who are unable to pay; improvements to the All-Purpose Room PA system; and teacher appreciation events. In past years, we have funded an artist-in-residence who worked with our 5th graders to create our courtyard mosaic, a second photocopier, interactive whiteboards, classroom maps, new area rugs for Kindergarten and First grade classes, materials for the media center, and purchasing and installation of new playground equipment.

Goals for this year include many of the same items as last year, increased teacher reimbursements for classroom items, school-wide consumables & equipment, academic enrichment programs and scholarships; as well as security improvements, and the conversion of our center courtyard into an outdoor classroom.

We Foster a Sense of Community

RCES PTA sponsors Family Events held at the school throughout the year.

Studies have shown associations between parental involvement at school, and better educational outcomes and fewer behavioral problems in children. Young kids love seeing us at school, in any capacity. It gives them the feeling of being the one "in the know" for a change. This doesn't require volunteering in the classroom or at events (although we appreciate that!). Attending an evening social event with them makes just as strong an impact. Our PTA recognizes this, and provides as many opportunities as possible for our families to spend time together at school.

This year's calendar includes: Kindergarten parents' first day of school coffee, Back to School Picnic, Pastries with Parents, International Night, Movie Night and much, much more! See all upcoming Events here

We sponsor extra-curricular school programs

We fund school assemblies featuring the arts, including past performances by Metropolitan Ballet. We also sponsor and coordinate after school programming.

This year's after school offerings include Panda Programming, Girls on the Run, Creative Crafts, Chess club, Piano, Dance, Chinese, French and Spanish language classes. See enrichmychild.com for a full list, with dates and registration information.

We coordinate parent volunteers

RCES parents volunteer in the school in many capacities.

Examples include: working with children in the classrooms, serving as lunch and recess aides, planning classroom parties, staffing family events and book fairs, creating bulletin boards, and assisting the school nurse and librarian.

RCES parents also volunteer outside of the school and after hours. Examples include: helping with graphic design needs, language translation, planning & organizing family events, baking for various PTA events, holiday gift wrapping service for the teachers.

We undertake outreach activities for those in need

In 2017, we held our first Race for Education fundraiser, donating over $6,000 of money raised to Amelia Elementary School in Beaumont, Texas, one of many Texas school greatly impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Last year's Race for Education event raised money for No Kid Hungry. We also provided gift cards to help local families in need over the holidays and summer break. In past years, we have held winter coat drives, supplied food baskets at Thanksgiving, gently used costumes for children to wear at Halloween, and Holiday gifts. In addition, our Nurses' Office is always appreciative of gently used clothing and new underwear in all sizes.

This year, RCES PTA plans to form a sister school partnership with an area Title 1 school, to provide them with needed supplies and funds. We also plan to hold a spring Read-a-thon, again donating a percentage of funds raised to a non-profit organization to be determined. Keep an eye out for opportunities to contribute and support others in our community! If you are interested in coordinating an outreach activity, please contact us.

Our bylaws, last updated in Spring 2018, are available upon request.
