The RCES PTA has been supporting our students since the school's founding in 1990.  Our mission is to achieve educational excellence by encouraging parental involvement, building strong teacher-parent relationships, enabling academic enrichment programs, and providing academic, fun, and family-oriented activities which promote learning and strengthen our community.

*According to our bylaws, the RCES Executive Board is comprised of the following:

  1. A president elected every spring, serving a term from July 1 - June 30
  2. Four vice presidents: VP Ways & Means is responsible for fundraising activities; VP Social is responsible for organizing social activities; VP School Support helps to meet intra-school needs; VP Community Relations acts as the 1st VP and seeks to facilitate communications.
  3. A treasurer
  4. A secretary 

WHAT DO WE DO?

We Finance School Programs

Our operating budget varies from $50,000 - $80,000 per year. Major projects funded last year included BrainPop software licenses for the entire school; Artist-in-residence, resulting in the new courtyard mosaic; academic enrichment programs; school-wide consumables; equipment for specials (PE, music, art); reimbursement of teachers for classroom items; a principal's discretionary fund; a scholarship fund to help defray the costs of field trips for those who are unable to pay; teacher appreciation events; rain ponchos for patrols; and family nights.

In the past, we have funded traveling Chrome book carts, interactive whiteboards, classroom maps, new area rugs for Kindergarden and First grade classes, materials for the media center, and purchasing and installation of new playground equipment,

Goals for this year include many of the same projects as last year, as well as an increase in teacher reimbursements for classroom items, shade covering for the playground, new furniture for the teacher's lounge, and courtyard improvements.

We Foster a Sense of Community

The PTA sponsors Family Events held at the school throughout the year. This year's calendar includes: Kindergarten popsicle playdate and Kindergarten parents' first day of school coffee, Dads & Donuts, Moms & Muffins, Science & Invention Night, Pizza/Bingo night, Movie night, Fitness night and the Spring variety show.

Studies have shown associations between parental involvement at school, and better educational outcomes and fewer behavioral problems in children. Young kids love seeing us at school, in any capacity. It gives them the feeling of being the one "in the know" for a change. This doesn't require volunteering in the classroom or at events (although we appreciate that!). Attending an evening social event with them makes just as strong an impact. Our PTA recognizes this, and provides as many opportunities as possible for our families to spend time together at school.

We sponsor extra-curricular school programs

In the past, these have included Mad Science, Adventures in Art, Chess club, Group Piano, Drama Kids, and French and Spanish language classes. We also fund school assemblies featuring the arts, including performances by Metropolitan Ballet.

We coordinate parent volunteers

RCES parents volunteer in the school in many capacities. Examples include: working with children in the classrooms, serving as lunch and recess aides, staffing family events and book fairs, creating bulletin boards, and assisting the school nurse and librarian.

RCES parents also volunteer outside of the school and after hours. Examples include: helping with graphic design needs, language translation, planning & organizing family events, helping with the garden club, baking for various PTA events, holiday gift wrapping service for the teachers.

We undertake outreach activities for those in need

In past years, we have held winter coat drives, supplied food baskets at Thanksgiving, gently used costumes for children to wear at Halloween and Holiday gifts. If you are interested in coordinating an outreach activity, please contact us.

 

We have an active Hospitality Committee 

This includes sending food, flowers, balloons and more to staff in our school community who have recently experienced a loss of loved one or have themselves needed some extra attention.

Do you have special skills that would benefit the PTA? Or a business interested in sponsoring a school program? PTA meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the Media Room, unless otherwise indicated. All are encouraged to join us!
